Response to Marine WC-54 Ambulance?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Medical personnel in an FMF (Fleet Marine Force) unit are indeed Navy, but all medical vehicles are included in the unit T/E, and so carry USMC markings and serials.
The FMF divisions in WW2 did not use any ambulances other than the jeep and International 1-ton. The USN used the WC-54 , as an administrative, or base area, vehicle in the latter stages of the war, and I have a good shot of a mixed group of ambulances picking up Okinawa WIAs from a hospital ship docking at Guam.
A typical MC-54 ambulance was OD, with red cross symbols on the sides and top, and on each rear door. The serial, USN 194649, was carried on the right rear door just below the window, and along the bottom of the rear (USN below the left door, 914649 below the right door). The serial would also have been carried on either side of the bonnet. The caudeceus(the winged staff with coiled snakes) was carried on a white panel on either side just aft of the cab doors.
